Natural remedies for relief from mosquito bites in Central Mass.

Mosquito bites increase your chance of infection from the wound.

Mosquito bites are not only bothersome, but each bite you receive is like playing a game of Russian roulette. As you know, these pesky insects carry a myriad of diseases such as West Nile Virus, and you never know which mosquito could be the culprit. With all the emphasis geared toward avoidance of mosquito-borne illness, few of us know the dangers associated with the “wounds” caused by a bite.

The itching caused by a mosquito bite is actually a low-grade form of pain. The mosquito is injecting a material into your skin that causes inflammation, which is redness, swelling, tenderness and heat which causes the bite to itch. Our body’s natural reaction to the bite is to release histamine; a compound that signals an allergic reaction, which causes itching. (That’s why medications called “anti-histamines” often do the trick to relieve the itch.)

Itchy mosquito bites can drive you bonkers!

There are many remedies on the market that will help reduce the pain and itching associated with mosquito bites. Many people turn to the afore-mentioned anti-histamines to reduce itching and other symptoms of their bug bites. However, these can cause side effects such as drowsiness. Of course there is the “pink stuff”, Calamine lotion, which acts as an astringent, meaning it will draw fluid out of the swollen bite to reduce some of the discomfort. Of course, the best mosquito bite treatment is not getting bitten which Mosquito Squad can help you with on your property. But, if you do find some bites, here are some all-natural treatments you might want to try:

  • Honey is a sweet way to relieve the itching and pain from a mosquito bite!

Apply a cold compress or ice the bite – A shock of cold therapy will provide relief for itching and keep you from swelling more

  • Dab a little essential oil to the bite – Tea Tree oil in particular seems to also have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that can help prevent infection at the site of the bite.
  • Vinegar – This natural remedy can be diluted with water and can help stop itching due to its acidity.
  • Honey – A sweet way to gain anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, it’s not surprising that honey can also ease itchy bites.
  • Tea Bags – The tannins in tea acts as an astringent, drawing extra fluid out of the bite.
  • Aloe Vera soothes the discomfort of the bite.

Baking Soda – Quells the inflammation that occurs at the skin’s surface, easing soreness.

  • Basil – The aromatic leaf naturally contains camphor and thymol, two compounds that can relieve itching. It’s easy to crush some up and apply it to bites, or buy the essential oil and dab onto the skin.
  • Lemon & lime – Both citrus fruits are anti-itch, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial.
  • Peppermint – Produces a cooling sensation that curbs itching.
  • Aloe Vera – Very good for itching and swelling and really is very soothing.
