Lexington Mosquito Control Post-Rain Check-up

Bedford-mosquito-control-summer-is-hereThe opening day of summer is here. And with Memorial Day, Central Massachusetts is warming up. The rain has cleared out (for now) and with the warmer temperatures that rain water is busy supporting the growth of new life. New mosquito life that is. The standing water on your Lexington and Bedford property could be filled with hundreds and thousands of future annoying mosquitoes feeding and growing through the larval and pupal stages; preparing to come out in search of a blood meal so they can lay hundreds of eggs of their own. While we talk about the 5 Ts of mosquito control quite often, an important post-rain reminder can’t hurt.

There are many areas of a property that can often be overlooked for water collection. Remember, it only takes about a bottle cap full of water to support the growing life of mosquito larva and pupae, so make sure you check these areas:

  • tree-holes-can-breed-mosquitoes-Lexington-mosquito-controlBird feeders often have trays or small lips that can hold a tiny bit of water.
  • Watering cans – you may like to collect rain water, but using a closed rain collection system is a must for avoiding mosquito population growth.
  • Tree holes – it is widely accepted to use expanding foam to fill any tree holes that hold water to avoid creating a mosquito breeding ground.
  • Over-watered, saturated landscapes and gardens (anywhere water can puddle, mosquitoes can develop).
  • Street drains – if you have a sewer drain in front of your home, make sure to remove debris and leaves so water won’t puddle up.
  • Clogged gutters. Out of sight, out of mind. Don’t forget to clean out your gutters to avoid puddling and mosquito breeding.
  • Low spots or ruts in your yard that don’t drain quick or dry out fast. If you have any drainage issue on your property, it is important to resolve these issues to avoid excess mosquito population growth.
  • Trash bin lids. Even when properly in place, some garbage bins have a dent or divot in the design which needs to be tipped each time it rains.
  • Landscape water features such as fountains and ponds, if improperly maintained can become a thriving mosquito nursery. If the water in your fountain is standing still without treatment repair it, remove it or drain it.

Water Features & Bird Baths

If you have an item in your yard that is meant to hold water and you just can’t part with it, we have must-follow recommendations for keeping it from nurturing larva and pupae mosquitoes into blood-sucking adult mosquitoes. While most water features contain a fountain or other element to keep the water moving, there are some exceptions like birth baths. To make sure your gorgeous bird bath is not growing new mosquitoes, simply empty and clean it every 3-4 days to eliminate mosquito larvae before it has a chance to mature.
