While we’ve recently enjoyed a few unseasonably warm days in Central Mass, I find myself thinking about the misconception that the ticks “are out”. The reality about ticks, specifically black-legged or deer ticks is that they don’t require the warmest weather to thrive, which is why they love the Northeastern United States so much.
Do Ticks Emerge in Spring?
It is a common misconception that deer ticks emerge in spring. Well it is partly true, it does not mean they are not already out. The tick life cycle is such that each stage of life has its own active time of year. The nymph deer tick will emerge in spring months, after having molted over the winter from its larval phase. Nymph ticks emerge in early spring in search of a blood meal to give them the nutrients needed to develop into the adult tick stage. But the adults are already out, and have been out all winter long.
Can I Get Lyme Disease in Winter?
According to Tick Encounter Resource Center, adult deer ticks begin their busiest feeding period in early October and will remain active all winter. As long as the weather is below freezing and the ground is not blanketed in snow, adult ticks will continue questing for their blood meal. Even after the first freeze.
In between snow & deep freezes, deer ticks climb on tall blades of grass and shrubs looking to feed on larger mammals such as cats, dogs & humans. Approximately 40-60% of adult deer ticks are carrying Lyme Disease, meaning you can absolutely be infected in the winter.
Central Mass Tick Control is a Year Round Endeavor
With tick control service by Mosquito Squad of Central Massachusetts, you won’t have to worry about ticks during any season. We offer two different tick control services that add up to the best tick control for your Chelmsford area property. Our traditional barrier spray eliminates 85-90% of ticks in your yard on contact and continues to work for up to 3 weeks. With the addition of twice a year tick tube placement, we can eliminate larval ticks while they are nesting in the den of rodents, effectively interrupting the tick life cycle.
While a few days of unseasonably warm weather has you thinking about tick safety, don’t forget when the cooler spring days are back upon us. When wasps, mosquitoes and flies are quiet and the weather is in the 40’s, adult ticks will still be just as active as they’ve been the last few days. If you’re ready for a tick-free winter, spring, summer & fall, email or call today 877-387-7823 for our Intensive Tick Treatment service.
